If I were still living in the UK, I would probably be joining in whatever festivities were going on locally, in celebration of today's Royal Wedding. Maybe its because I'm a Londoner, (well... 1/4 Cockney, anyway!), but I always imagine that any "do" to do with the royal family always ends up with a good old Cockney knees up. Some older male, possibly Prince Phillip, playing the upright piano whilst they're all singing in their London accents, (their RP accents are pure show, y'know! ), about doing the Lambeth walk and how Mother Brown needs to keep her knees up!
Being ten years old, in 1981, the wedding of Prince Charles & Lady Diana was a huge deal to me. Of course there was the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, but all I remember of that is a party at school, certainly not the huge celebration we had around my neighborhood. Part of the area I grew up in contained an old limestone quarry, the floor of which had been grassed over. This was known to all the residents as simply "The Green" and this is where we had the big party.
Sometime after all the pomp and circumstance and balcony waving was over on the tv, we all congregated on "The Green", where I remember there was a vast spread of fare including pop, bangers in buns, burgers, jelly and 'mange and fairy cakes, although a lot of my time seemed to be taken up with "running around" with kids I had only ever kind of known in passing.
It was kind of the same, but different, to the street parties for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953, I had seen on old newsreels, reenacted on various tv shows' story lines and that I had heard of by way of stories from the older members of my family.
For Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding, there'll be no special parties or attention from me. Still, knowing they are likely to pop over to this blog, I should like to wish them a long, happy marriage!

a la Spitting Images? I always liked their portrayal of the Queen mum as an intoxicated Beryl Reid!
I remember watching Diana and Phillip's wedding on TV. I would have been about 15 or so at the time. It was kind of like a real life fairy tale So, I DVR'ed this Royal Wedding. Bit of nostalgia about the idea of a fairy tale. Thankfully, by DVR'ing it, I was able to fast forward through most of the commentary and get to the wedding itself and then the kisses on the balcony as well as the purple Astin Martin. :-D Hopefully, this marriage has a happier ending.
